Sculpture Space NYC – Center for Ceramic Art is pleased to present “Between”, a two -person exhibition featuring the work of Colleen Carlson and Sui Park. Although seemingly an incongruent pairing of works in disparate materials, Sui Park (industrial zip ties) and Colleen Carlson (porcelain) both share an affinity for the archetype of weaving. Forms grow through the repetition of a singular module and these accretions form a kind of “structural biomorphism”. Both artists evoke a common language that references forms in nature, architecture both animal and human, cellular growth, and geometry, without being reproductive or specific, falling somewhere between. Both artists also work with the play of light, creating passages that are both transparent, translucent, and opaque.
Originally from western Canada, Colleen Carlson is a skilled ceramicist based in Long Island City, New York. With a strong background in fashion, Colleen has always been drawn to the power of aesthetics and presentation. Through her work, she aims to create a sense of purity and continuity of motion, often employing undulating forms made of ceramic threads. Although Colleen's work has an affinity with the work of Victor Vasarely, and Bridget Riley, rather than the creation of illusionistic space and structure, her use of ceramic coils creates an actual play of light and structure that achieves stunning optical effects that fuses art and functionality. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Vogue, and Ceramics Monthly and she was recently awarded first place in the Sconce category at NYCXDESIGN, interior design awards 2025.
“As an artist, I am fascinated by the transformative power of light and its ability to enhance the tactile beauty of ceramics. My work is rooted in the belief that form and function can coexist harmoniously, with each piece telling a story. By exploring the contrast between the texture of clay and the intensity of light, I aim to create sculptures that not only engage visually but also evoke an emotional response”.
Trained both as an architect and in the ancient art of Korean basketry, Sui Park is a crafter of shapes. Park is a New York-based artist born in Seoul, Korea. The artist has authored a language that is very much her own, utilizing industrially mass-produced materials, particularly monofilament and zip ties. Her materials are new, but her manual practice is as old as time and her work is innovative, like modernist trailblazers Ruth Asawa and the artist known as Gego. (Gertrud Louise Goldschmidt)
“Much of my inspiration comes from nature, which offers both discovery and pause. In its overlooked details I find moments of clarity, possibilities for breakthroughs, and spaces for reflection. Through my sculptures, I present nature in abstract, porous ways, forms that can be filled with memory, contemplation, and anticipation.”
Much of Park’s work evoke the biological. Is this a vision of the future, where microplastics have totally colonized our bodies?
Park has had several solo exhibitions and public art commissions including Microcosm at Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Herning, Denmark in 2025 and City Ecology at Bella Abzug Park in New York City in 2024. She has participated in over 200 exhibitions internationally. Park’s artwork has been acquired by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Oregon, TAMAT Museum of Tapestries and Textile Arts of The Wallonaia-Brussels Federation in Tournai, Belgium, the Saks Fifth Avenue Flagship Store, City Harvest Food Rescue Center in New York and many others.
Sui Park’s education includes an MDes in Interior Architecture at Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA in Environmental Design at Maryland Institute College of Art. Sui Park also holds an MFA and BFA in Fiber Arts at Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea.
