Opening: Dec 15th 2020

Special thanks to Maryland Institute College of Art and the Queens Council on the Arts for their supportive grants to the artists Aya Kakeda and Miwa Neishi.

Miwa Neishi

Miwa Neishi is from Tokyo Japan, studied sculpture in Niigata University, MFA in Kent State University in Ohio. Based on her drawings inspired by abstract art and calligraphy – Miwa interprets expressions between East and West which carry dual languages and multiple cultural perspectives with her ceramics. Miwa has worked with both contemporary and traditional Japanese art in New York City where she developed the idea of sharing the diverse history of Japan and opening the way of approaching foreign culture. Moji pots- her current focus of sculptural vases are based on joining prehistoric figurines (Jomon pottery) and modern abstract designs. Miwa has exhibited and sold her work in both the U.S. and Japan, currently working at the Sculpture Space NYC and living in Queens NY.

Aya Kakeda

Aya Kakeda was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and is now based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work is widely influenced by folk art and folktales and reflects the current world from her personal perspective. Similar to the cautionary tales found in folklore, She creates mystical characters and places them in seemingly utopian surroundings, that show with a closer look a distorted reflection of our own world. She is a full-time faculty at the Maryland Institute Colledge of Art.

When she is not creating her own world, She illustrates for clients all over the world. You can see her work at www.ayakakeda.com or Instagram@ayakakeda
