Throwing Large Clay Vessels -Workshop with Andrew Kennedy

This three-day hands-on workshop teaches hybrid techniques to overcome the pull of gravity and the weight of clay. This is a rare opportunity to work in a small group with an accomplished clay artist who works at a large scale.

Andrew will cover :

Spiral wedging

Coil and throw techniques

Integrating the vertical height of hand-building with the centrifugal centering of the wheel.

Mastering methods to achieve height and volume,

Centering large amounts of clay

How to create forms working with an increased quantity of clay

Establishing a strong base for your large piece

How to work with templates and custom wood tools

Session 1: An introduction and demonstration of stacking clay on the wheel and centering the clay into a strong base structure.

Session 2: Build and shape vessels using hand-rolled or extruded coils, translate a 2D drawing plan into a 3D clay structure, and master working from templates.

Session 3: Finish and refine your vessel's final shape.

The workshop fee covers the clay you will use during our session together!

FIRING: If you love what you make and want to keep your piece, firing is available for an extra fee. We offer a special bundle discount if you choose both the bisque and cone 6 firings. The combined rate is 7 cents per cubic inch, which also fully covers your cone 6 glazes and includes a 3-hour open studio session to come back and apply them!

To help us manage our studio space, we charge a refundable $100 security deposit. Here is how the timeline works and what the deposit ensures:

Drying & First Firing: We will store and dry your piece for 3 weeks before it goes into the bisque kiln.
Glazing Session: Once it's ready, we will contact you to sign up for your 3-hour Saturday glazing session (available slots run between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM).
Final Pick-Up: After your piece is fired a final time, we will hold it for 3 days. Please make sure to pick up your finished work during this window so your security deposit can be fully refunded!

Andrew S. Kennedy is the Co-Founder and Director of Sculpture Space NYC located in Long Island City. Kennedy came to New York to study fine art at the Cooper Union. He later attended the Skowhegan Art Residency and worked as a sculpture fabricator for artist Richard Artschwager. Kennedy’s ceramics are inspired by an appreciation for large scale utilitarian forms. Andrew’s work is represented by Ralph Pucci International in New York City.

Refund Policy:

Full Refund (Minus Fee): Cancel at least 2 weeks (14 days) before the workshop starts to get a full refund minus a 3% processing fee.

Partial Refund: Cancel between 7 and 13 days before the workshop to get a 50% refund.

No Refund: Cancellations made 6 days or less before the workshop start date are non-refundable.

How to Cancel: Send an email to info@sculpturespacenyc.com with your name and order number.

Processing Time: Refunds take 5 to 7 business days to show on your original payment method.

Transfer Option: You can transfer your spot to another person if you cannot attend. Please notify us at least 48 hours before the workshop.
