RISD MASTER CERAMIST 2022

Kalee Calhoun  &  Miguel Lastra
July 15th -August 20th

RISD and Sculpture Space NYC, with this annual exhibition, mark their commitment to promote a new generation of artists working in ceramics, showcasing a diversity of works and techniques by recent MFA graduates from the RISD ceramic department.

Through this exhibition, SSNYC wishes to highlight emerging directions within the ceramics field.

This exhibition is made possible by the support and commitment of Katy Schimert and  Nicholas Oh from RISD; Nicolas Touron of Sculpture Space NYC, and most of all the artists exhibiting their work Kalee Calhoun and Miguel Lastra.

What Is Hidden is a fantastical domestic space engendered  by the desire to reclaim my heritage in the face of transgenerational shame, and to imagine the women who came before me and the stories they might want to tell. Figures from Slavic folklore (Leshy, Sirin, Kikimora, Baba Yaga, etc.) combine with references from my upbringing in dance (over-ornamentation, pink and black, tulle and ribbon) to transition these characters from historical mythology into a personal mythos I’ve imagined for the ancestors my family has secreted away. I hang these mythological masks on the wall as stand-ins for my many unknown grandmothers, preparing a lush room where their spirits are welcome to meet me. A chair, table, and tea set wait patiently for their arrival, while a mirror observes the empty scene, ready to capture the truths of the women who will sit before it.

I propose a radical body. Hollowed flesh embracing its multiplicity. Reclined, seated, standing in ways similar to that of its marble counterparts; the European classical bodies of the past. The radical body occupies a joyous abjection. It exposes its entropic body to the viewer not for the dehumanizing possibility of being solely a spectacle, but for the mutual action of corporeal contemplation. The viewers’ gaze reaches out to this body and, with the intimate act of looking, discerns what is being seen. The viewer creates presumptions, evaluations and judgements of the othered body. The gazing body relates its own flesh to this body. These ceramic sculptures, often made from coils of colored and waste clays, are empathic forms through which we can seek freedom from the ideals of the western canon and commit to the acceptance of the variety of bodies and their agency.

SSNYC Curatorial Program is dedicated to promoting contemporary visual art focusing on the research and exploration of three dimensional work with an emphasis towards ceramics.  Sculpture Space NYC's mission is to stimulate creativity, new ideas and collaboration in ceramics-based investigations. Artists, designers and craftspeople of all backgrounds converge in this center to experiment, learn, make, reflect and grow artistically.
