SCULPTURE SPACE NYC- RESIDENCY OPEN CALL

The SSNYC-CCA  Artist-in-Residence program provides artists access to a communal studio in NYC. This program is for artists who are at a stage in their careers where an intensive residency in ceramics will further their artistic development.

 

The SSNYC-CCA  Artist-in-Residence program provides artists access to a communal studio in NYC. This program is for artists who are at a stage in their careers where an intensive residency in ceramics will further their artistic development.

The residency intends to offer the gift of time to work on specific projects, build community connections, and provide resources for project development while enjoying the collaborative nature of a shared studio

The program values and welcomes all individuals as unique persons and artists. Sculpture Space NYC-CCA does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender expression, age, disability, or sexual orientation.  In addition, our studio is fully wheelchair accessible.

Eligibility:

21 years of age or older

Not enrolled in a degree-seeking program during the residency term

Not participating in another residency during the program dates

Able to commit a minimum of 15 hours per week to their studio practice

Please note: Sculpture Space provides the facility, equipment, and help in loading kilns. Applicants must have basic ceramic experience and be able to work independently.

Selection: 

Selection is based on an open application and review process led by our committee. Applications are evaluated based on artistic merit and readiness for the residency and projects that are realistic for our facility. Selected applicants will be notified by the end of September, 2026. They must attend (in person) an hour-long orientation session before the residency starts.

Application Materials:

Please provide us with your contact information (full name, email, phone number, address) as well as website and any professional postings on social media.

A short bio with a list of your 5 most relevant exhibitions, residencies, or projects.

A fully developed proposal must include a timeline with dates, hours, and days; five images showing separate pieces with a caption document; project goals and concepts, production methods and equipment requirements, and the size and quantity of pieces to fire.

Proposal Requirements:

Timeline: Please submit an outline showing the sequence of your activities at the residency and dates. (Include how many days and hours you plan to work and please be accurate and realistic).

Images: Email five distinct images showing five separate finished artworks. Please indicate if these pieces are directly related to the body of work you plan to develop at SSNYC-CCA.

Altogether, the images should not be more than 10MB (info@sculpturespacenyc.com)

Caption Document: Submit a separate document that includes detailed captions for all five images.

Front Loader Gas Kiln: 36” Hx22”x22”

 Program Overview & Schedule

Duration: 10-week residency from October 19 to December 19, 2026

Flexibility: Dates are fixed. No rescheduling or extensions are available.

Artist Commitments:

Onsite Hours: Minimum of 15 hours per week at the SSNYC studio.

Project Management: Maintain alignment with your original proposal, timeline, budget, and scope.

Documentation: Record your creative process for archival and storytelling purposes.

Public Engagement: Present a finished final project to the public, including an artist talk or demonstration.

Provided Benefits & Resources:

Studio Access: Use of communal studio space during open hours (Monday–Sunday, 6:00 AM – 11:30 PM).

Firing Credit: Up to $2,000 in firing credits.

Materials: Up to 100 lbs of clay (from a limited selection).

Glazes: Access to SSNYC’s stock cone 6 and cone 10 glazes. Note: Raw materials for custom glaze mixing are not provided.

Important limitations to note:

SSNYC cannot assist with visa applications.

SSNYC cannot provide letters of support for external funding applications.

Agreement:

Selected artists must sign a formal agreement confirming they accept and will adhere to these terms.

Storage & Shipping:

SSNYC will not be able to provide help with shipping cost and storage of the works that are created during the residency.
